Captain's Log: Roswell, New Mexico

We're glad that we've decided to continue on the trip. It has been a decidedly good re-start to the trip here in Roswell. It was a long drive from Texas to here though. In fact, there wasn't much of anything except...
Windmills. Fields and fields of them lined both sides of the highway.

This. Although, I don't actually know what this is called. Something to do with oil though, I think.

But seriously, over 150 miles without so much as a gas station. My one-too-many-crime-dramas-on -late-night-television mind thought that this would be a great place to be murdered. No one would notice...and on that happy note....

When we finally did find a gas station, it's not normal. It's not 87, 89, 91....Odd, isn't it?

Welcome to New Mexico!!!

We were greeted by all sorts of aliens this morning as we strolled around the tiny town of Roswell. It's not as big as either of us thought it would be, nor is it hyped up full of crazy people. It's actually pretty normal. It's like the Salem of the Southwest.

Just your typical diner here in Roswell

Illegal alien.

Fully outfitted coke machine

We decided to go to the UFO museum and Research Center. It's a pretty fun place. And to be honest, it certainly makes you think. Both of us left the museum wondering "what if?"
The UFO Museum :)

Getting nervous for what truths and lies lay beyond the doorway to the musuem

The first pushpin for Central PA. Oh yeah!

They're here.

Or is it?
haha
Mythbusters: Josh debunks the ancient Mayan 'proof' of early aliens. Apparently, each of the symbols is some sort of predictive  indicator of the then-future coming of the aliens. But Josh noticed that some of the symbols repeat BUT they mean different things. Oops.
We headed over to the Roswell Museum and Art Center after that which is a surprisingly lovely place for a small town. It was a labyrinthine building with hallways and offshoots off of hallways full of old artifacts and awesome southwestern art. I think my favorite part though, was the chalk drawings all along the sidewalks leading up to the art center. It looked like a collection of people got together and decided to be awesome. Seriously, the drawings were good. Here are a few...
Ariel, perhaps?
This one is kinda creepy. Zombie teddy bear.
We had some fun in the shops too.
I look a little ashamed but I was actually just trying to bob the little buggers on my head.

Almost believable, yeah?
Okay, and the last thing you need to know about Roswell is the fast food joints are just a little different...
That is a McDonalds. Shaped like a UFO.
Cam you read the sign beneath the Arby's? It says 'Aliens Welcome' . We made three U-Turns  to get a picture of this

Lightposts shaped like aliens! It's like the Hershey of the Southwest!
Tomorrow, we're getting up really early to make the 10 hour drive from here to Tucson, AZ. We're pretty excited to get to the Desert Museum, so hopefully we can make it in a day. Thanks for your prayers.  We're okay, really.
